This Copycat Sonic Ocean Water recipe is perfect for summer.
It is super easy to make and kid-friendly, too.
Its subtle tropical flavor reminds me of vacation.
Just like my Blue Hawaiian and Blue Lagoon, it has a gorgeous blue color and is perfect for sipping poolside or at BBQs.
It would also be a hit for patriotic holidays like the 4th of July, Memorial Day, or Labor Day.
I make it often as I don't have a Sonic nearby anymore!
🌊What The Heck Is Ocean Water?🌊
Ocean water gets its name because of its beautiful blue color.
I'll admit it is kind of a weird name.
Anyone who has ever been to the beach knows it is not something you want to get in your mouth!
Luckily, our recipe only looks like its namesake.
💙Why We Make This On Repeat💙
- Common Ingredients: This easy drink comes together with just five pantry staples.
- No Special Equipment: No blender is required either! In fact, I bet you can whip it up in your own kitchen faster than the rollerskating waitresses can bring it to your car!
- Stunning Blue Color: This is sure to be a showstopper at your party!
🥥Ingredient Notes and Shopping Tips🥥

- White Sugar: Adding sugar to soda may seem silly. However, it is combined with coconut extract to make a sweetened coconut syrup.
- Coconut Extract: Look for this in the spice aisle near the vanilla.
- Lemon Lime Soda: Sprite is my favorite soda, and I always have it in the house. Any bubbly soda, though, like Sierra Mist or 7 Up, would work fine here.
- Blue Food Coloring: Use liquid over gel for easier mixing.

Swedish Fish are also super cute and fun, especially for kids!

Fun Variations
- Pineapple Extract: If you're not a fan of coconut, feel free to swap out the coconut extract for another fruit of your choice, such as pineapple.
- Slushie: Pour the ocean water mixture into an ice cube tray. Freeze 6-8 hours until solid, and then blend. Do not put soda in the blender as it will lose its fizz and could even explode!
- Top with ice cream for a float-style drink.
❓FAQs❓
Can I Make a Larger Batch?
Yes, you can make this in a pitcher or punch bowl instead. Here is the recipe for 10 servings:
1 Cup Water
1 Cup Sugar
5 Teaspoons Coconut Extract
10 Cans Of Sprite
Can I add alcohol?
Of Course! I suggest vodka or pineapple rum.
🗂️Tips🗂️
- Chill all ingredients and your glass for an icy cold drink.
- If using regular ice cubes, you can also freeze some of the ocean water to avoid a watered-down drink.
- Be careful with coconut extract as it is concentrated and potent. A little goes a long way. You can always add more, but you can't take it out!
- Use leftovers to make ocean water popsicles!
Sonic Ice
To match Sonic's style, use smaller nugget-style ice. You can pick it up at your local grocery store or invest in an ice maker on Amazon.
